None of these are fitness problems — they are planning problems, and a few minutes of simple math fixes all three before you ever lace a boot.
That is exactly what the three calculators above are for. There is nothing to sign up for, nothing to install, and no mystery: each tool prints the exact formula it uses and the numbers it plugged in, so you can check the logic and pick up the rules of thumb yourself. Tool 01 — Trail Time: how long will the hike really take?
The single most useful number in trip planning is not distance — it is time. A flat 8-mile rail trail and an 8-mile climb up a peak share a distance but not an afternoon. Knowing your finish time is what keeps you off the trail after dark and tells you when to turn around.
The formula: Naismith's Rule
Our Trail Time tool is built on Naismith's Rule, devised in 1892 by the Scottish mountaineer William W. Naismith. The rule is elegantly simple: allow one hour for every 3 miles (5 km) of forward distance, plus an extra hour for every 2,000 feet (600 m) of ascent. (Wikipedia: Naismith's rule)
In the units the calculator works in, that is:
- A flat walking speed of 5 km/h (about 3 mph).
- Plus 0.1 minutes per meter climbed — which is the same as one hour per 600 meters of gain.
So the core equation is:
time = distance ÷ pace + (elevation gain × 0.1 min/m)
A classic check: a 5 km route with 600 m of climbing comes out to exactly 2 hours — one hour for the distance, one for the climb. That matches Naismith's original rule precisely, which is how we know the tool is wired correctly.
The descent refinement: Langmuir's correction
Naismith's rule famously ignores downhill, as if descending were free. It is not. In 1984, mountaineering instructor Eric Langmuir added a widely used correction: on gentle descents (roughly 5–12°) you actually move faster, so you subtract 10 minutes for every 300 m of descent; on steep descents (steeper than about 12°) careful footing slows you down, so you add 10 minutes for every 300 m. That is the "Downhill steepness" switch in the tool. Leave it on Rolling for ordinary mixed terrain (the two effects roughly cancel), flip it to Gentle for smooth, graded downhills, or Steep for knee-jarring, rocky descents.
How to use it
- Toggle mi/ft or km/m to match how you read your map or trail app.
- Enter the trail distance (one-way for an out-and-back means doubling it, so use total round-trip distance).
- Enter total elevation gain and elevation loss — most trail apps and guidebooks list both.
- Pick your pace: Easy (4 km/h), Average (5 km/h, the Naismith default), or Fast (6 km/h, for fit hikers on good trail).
- Set the downhill steepness, then read the moving-time estimate and the breakdown.
Worked example
An 8-mile hike with 1,800 ft of gain and 1,800 ft of loss, at an average pace on rolling terrain, returns about 3 hours 30 minutes of moving time — roughly two and a half hours for the distance and another hour for the climb. Switch the downhill to steep and the tool adds time for the pounding descent. Drop to a leisurely pace and it adds more still.
Where it breaks down
Naismith assumed a fit walker on reasonable ground with no stops. So the estimate is moving time only — it does not include lunch, photos, filtering water, or a long summit break, which can easily add an hour or two. It also does not know about deep snow, scrambling, river crossings, a heavy overnight pack, large groups (who move at the speed of their slowest member), altitude, or sheer fatigue late in a long day. Treat the output as a confident floor, then pad it. A useful habit: add 25–50% for technical terrain or a tired group, and always know your turnaround time — the latest moment you can keep going and still get back before dark.
Tool 02 — Water to Carry: enough, but not a backbreaking gallon
Water is the heaviest thing most day hikers carry — a liter weighs 2.2 pounds — so guessing wrong is costly in both directions. Too little risks dehydration, headaches, and dangerous decisions; too much is dead weight that slows you down and tires you out.
The formula
The Water to Carry tool starts from the baseline recommended by outfitters like REI: about half a liter (0.5 L) of water per hour of moderate hiking in moderate temperatures, scaled up as effort and heat rise. REI notes that strenuous hiking in high heat can demand a liter per hour or more. (REI: Hydration Basics)
We turn that guidance into a transparent equation:
water = hours × 0.5 L/h × effort multiplier × heat multiplier
- Effort scales the rate: Easy ×0.8, Moderate ×1.0, Hard ×1.5.
- Heat scales it again: Cool (below 60°F) ×0.85, Mild (60–75°F) ×1.0, Warm (75–85°F) ×1.25, Hot (85°F+) ×1.6.
So four hours of moderate hiking on a warm day works out to 4 × 0.5 × 1.0 × 1.25 = 2.5 liters. Push that to six strenuous hours in real heat and the tool lands near 7 liters — about 1.2 liters per hour, right in line with the expert ceiling.
How to use it
- Enter your time on trail. The quickest way is to copy the moving-time figure from the Trail Time tool above and round up for breaks.
- Pick your effort level — flat and slow, rolling and moderate, or big sustained climbs.
- Pick the temperature band from the forecast for the warmest part of your day.
- Read the total in liters, fluid ounces, and approximate bottles, plus your per-hour drink rate.
Carry it or treat it?
The tool tells you how much water you will need — not how much you must carry on your back the whole way. On longer or hotter routes, the smarter move is to carry less and refill: a lightweight filter or purification tablets let you top up from a stream or lake, turning a backbreaking carry into a manageable one. Where it breaks down
Sweat rate is deeply personal — it varies with body size, fitness, acclimatization, and altitude — so two hikers on the same trail can genuinely need different amounts. Use the result as a well-grounded starting point and adjust from experience: if you regularly finish hikes with full bottles, you can trim; if you finish thirsty, carry more. Hiking with kids or a dog? They need their own supply on top of yours. And the simplest field check still works: drink before you are thirsty, and aim to keep your urine pale.
Tool 03 — Pack Load: a weight ceiling your knees will thank you for
A pack that is too heavy is more than uncomfortable — it is a genuine injury risk and the fastest way to turn a great trail into a miserable slog. The Pack Load tool gives you a sensible upper limit based on your body weight and the kind of trip.
The formula
The long-standing guideline, again echoed by REI, is a simple percentage of body weight: a loaded day pack should not exceed about 10% of your body weight, and a loaded backpacking pack should not exceed about 20%. (REI: How Much Should Your Pack Weigh)

For a 150-pound hiker, that is roughly 15 pounds for a day hike and 30 pounds for an overnight. Enter your own body weight and the tool draws the ceiling; enter your packed bag's actual weight and the load gauge shows where you land, with a blaze line marking the limit.
How to use it
- Choose lb or kg.
- Enter your body weight.
- Pick Day hike (10% ceiling) or Backpacking (20% ceiling).
- Optionally, put your loaded pack on a scale and enter the number to see your load as a percentage of body weight, and whether you are over or under the line.
Understanding base weight
Experienced backpackers obsess over base weight — the weight of everything in your pack except food, water, and fuel (the "consumables" you use up as you go). Base weight is the number you can actually control by choosing lighter gear, and it is where the big savings live: the tent, sleeping bag, and pack itself, often called the "big three." Where it breaks down
The 20% figure is a ceiling, not a target — lighter is almost always better, and plenty of hikers are most comfortable well under it. It is also a guideline for healthy adults, not a universal law: a 2021 study at Philmont Scout Ranch found that a higher pack-to-body-weight ratio was associated with more hiking injuries, and load-carrying research suggests that what really matters is your total moving mass — body plus pack — so the heavier you are, the more conservative your ratio should be. Your fitness, age, experience carrying loads, and the length of the trip matter more than any single percentage. When in doubt, carry less.
How accurate are these calculators, really?
Every formula here is a respected, field-tested rule of thumb — the same math guidebooks, search-and-rescue teams, and outfitters use — and we tested each one against published reference values before shipping it. But they are planning estimates, not promises. Naismith's rule can be 20–30% off on rough ground; water needs swing with your personal physiology; the pack-weight ceiling is a guideline with real exceptions. The right way to use them is to plan with the numbers, then build in a margin: more time, a little more water, a little less weight. And no calculator changes the golden rule — carry the Ten Essentials on every hike, tell someone your plan, and turn around when conditions or the clock say so.
Putting all three together
Say you are eyeing a 10-mile loop with 2,200 feet of gain on an 80°F day, and you weigh 170 pounds.
- Trail Time at an average pace gives about 4 hours 20 minutes of moving time. Add an hour of breaks and you should plan for a 5.5-hour day — start by 9 a.m. to be safely down well before dark.
- Water to Carry for 5.5 moderate-to-hard hours in warm-to-hot weather lands around 4 liters. You decide to carry 2 liters and bring a filter to refill at the lake halfway.
- Pack Load sets your day-hike ceiling at 17 pounds. With 2 liters of water (4.4 lb), lunch, layers, and the Ten Essentials, you are comfortably under it.
Five minutes of planning, and the day has a shape: when to start, when to turn around, what to drink, and what to carry. That is the whole point.

How long does a 10-mile hike take? For 10 miles with about 2,000 feet of climbing at an average pace, expect roughly 4 hours 15 minutes of moving time, plus your breaks. Flatter is faster; steep or technical trail is slower.
